Finn surveyed the glittering drifts of snow in the sunflower field behind The Moon and Mermaid. It was private land that the farmer – a regular customer in the pub – had given him access to. Which meant he could walk without being disturbed and build a snowman without being snowballed by a million kids. There was also a short cut through it to the beach, which he’d only discovered a few months before. Another spot Finn liked to escape to when he needed to clear his head.

‘Ready?’ Holly clapped her hands as she strode up beside him. She wore a hot pink snow-suit that was way too long for her – she’d had to roll the trouser hems up a few times – a matching knitted scarf and silver boots that looked at least two sizes too large. She’d obviously raided someone’s wardrobe for her latest calendar task. Despite that, she oozed a natural sexiness. Her cheeks looked pink, her mouth glossy, and her grey eyes were lively as she checked out the field.

‘I’m always ready.’ Finn grinned as he pulled his eyes away from Holly’s face, and watched as she tried to pull something out of her pocket. Unfortunately, as her gloves were bulky, she couldn’t get them inside. She began to tug one off. ‘I’ll do it, if you like? My gloves are thin so it’s no problem,’ Finn offered.

‘Okay, thanks. It’s today’s calendar quest. These are a pain to put back on.’ When Holly nodded, Finn pushed his hand into her trouser pocket, trying to ignore the heat from her skin beneath the suit which he could feel through his glove. Paying no attention to the instant hit of lust that shot through his system – which clearly hadn’t got the memo saying hands off – he pulled the piece of paper out.

‘What did you do on the tenth and eleventh?’ Finn asked, making conversation before reading it.

‘On the tenth of December, I knitted this excellent scarf.’ Holly swirled the end in the air before pulling a face. ‘Which took me most of the day, and Madge had to finish it. On the eleventh, Sally made me eat three raw oysters, because she said you haven’t lived until you’ve tried at least one. I’m pretty sure I had – and I’ve no plans to repeat that experience. I’ve got a lot more adventurous recently, but that’s one step too far.’ Holly’s nose creased attractively and Finn had to pull his eyes away. He glanced at the paper in his hand.

‘Day twelve. Build a snowman and call it Marcel,’ Finn read, chuckling.

Holly shook her head. ‘I’ve no idea what I’m supposed to learn from that. I hadn’t thought about him at all for days – and now all I can do is think about him and Lucinda.’ Her forehead scrunched. ‘And I’ve realised I’m still upset – with both of them.’

‘Have they contacted you?’

‘Marcel hasn’t. My sister texted and then called when I wasn’t expecting it. I’ve ignored all her attempts at contact since.
